Drawing with biro / ballpoint pen

I have been trying to work on a few new pieces of artwork; every painting I have been doing recently, seems to involve watercolour and fineliner ink and this is the media I am most comfortable with. However, I wanted to experiment a little so I decided it was time I tried to use ballpoint pen again. That is the everyday box-standard biro pen! I played around with this whilst in college on a few little pieces, but never attempted anything on a larger scale as I thought the permanence of the medium was daunting- no erasing!

However, something that really inspired me was simply just to search for 'Biro art' on Google. Some of the artists using them are simply mind-blowing. You may be familiar with some of the work by portraiture artists like Juan Francisco Casas and of Samuel Silva, who stand out in particular and create incredibly photo-realistic artworks- it's hard to believe they are not photographs! Whilst I could never achieve that level of god-like skill, I have still found it very enjoyable doodling around!
However, using this medium is so immensely time-consuming! It's also very easy to make a mistake. It is very pressure sensitive and especially if the ink blobs out every so often! I am still trying to get the hang of it...

I used a multi-colour packet of them and whilst you do use a lot of ink for one drawing, it's cheap to replace. It's also very readily available- biro pens are everywhere- in your house, in the office, at work, at school, in your pocket or bag - so why not pick up one and have a go :)
